Jake já atua desde cedo no esporte, mas foi em 2013, quando foi anunciado que ele seria um dos lutadores participantes do The Ultimate Fighter Nations: Canadá vs. Austrália.
Devido a uma decisão unânime após dois rounds, Matthews perdeu para o canadense Olivier Aubin-Mercier.
Matthews teve a estreia no UFC contra o americano Dashon Johnson 2014. Ele venceu a luta por finalização com um triângulo no terceiro round.
